ABOUT MOLECULE 2024

Molecule is a series of sister sculptures, each one designed as a collection of holes held together. The resulting composition is an apparently solid thing, dotted with voids, suggestive of a box but devoid of its corners or planes. It explores both transparency and solidity, simultaneously delicate and rigid.

The deliberately geometric and eclectically colored aesthetic is the norm in South India. We grew up surrounded by pink houses, triangular doors, decorative grills, and ornate patterns, all expressions of joyous creativity. Years later in design school, we encountered Sottsass and Memphis. We learned about his trips to India, studied his photos of candy-colored South Indian houses, his lamp named Ashoka, and his collections for Alessi. This became a profound moment for us, realizing that the most important Italian and Memphis influence on our work was to steer us away from a Eurocentric design narrative and reconnect us with our own histories and Indian influences.Each fragment of Molecule is cast in resin and molded by hand to form wood-style mortise and tenon joints, then assembled, and clamped slowly over months. This delicate and complex process is guided as much by intuition as by technical precision, a suspension between industrial materials and ritualistic hand-making that is a recurring theme in our practice.Reminiscent of vibrant houses in South India, Molecule's colorful and whimsical architecture invites use as a table, pedestal, vase, or vessel, adding sculptural texture to any space
