Simple, playful geometries form the light and fluid sw cane coffee table. The table perched on an arched-belly base on one side and a rolled rack for storage on the other, offers moments of surprise in its subtle reveals of form and color. The minimalist steel frame is dressed with a hand-woven cane top, that uses a traditional six-way cane weaving technique from India.

Learn more about the sw geometric coffee table

Inspired by the skill and speed of Indian craftswomen who produce cane products in village craft communities, designers Utharaa L Zacharias and Palaash Chaudhary learnt and brought the technique to their studio where they hand-weave cane tops themselves, in tribute and admiration to traditional handicrafts. Each cane top for the cane coffee table takes about 36 hours of weaving, poetically bridging a slow and intricate, age-old craft with the industrial processes of the fabricated steel frame.

The sw cane coffee table is part of the summer-winter or sw collection by soft-geometry that explores product personalities and the material choices that define them. The three piece collection includes a coffee table, end table and accent chair, built in minimalist steel frames and dressed with tops in different materials that employ diverse techniques & processes.

The hand-woven cane lattice tops of the sw cane coffee tables are a complete contrast to the sleek flat color tops of the geometric cofee tables, both of which dress the same metal frame. In creating these distinct personalities the collection illustrates a diversity in products that mirror the diversity of the people that use them and pose a limitless opportunity to grow into more materials, processes and personalities. In a small way, the pieces hope to inspire a rich personality culture into the realm of furniture, recognizing, emphasizing and celebrating the many identities that can be born from material qualities.
